Face Unlock - A gimmick or a Boon

2018 began with me gifting myself a luxury, I bought the Oneplus 5T and I had to say it was a much-needed upgrade from my previous Lenovo Vibe - P1 which had aged beyond its use and had a dilapidated screen.

Unlike the Lenovo, the Oneplus 5T was slim and light and did offer a great battery-life inspite of being a downgrade from 5000maH battery my previous phone had.

What instantly caught my attention was the Amazing AMOLED screen and the powerful processor which was able to run multiple apps seamlessly. I still hadn't activated the face unlock which I had previously felt was a silly and a useless feature to have. I spent a couple of days fiddling with the phone, exploring it's camera, apps, music and sound. I found many a times the huge 6.0" screen to be a bit too big for my hands and it did put me in a lot of discomfort while I tried to access the ends of the screen. I found the camera (especially for Bouquet effect to be good), I am not even a garden-variety photographer, so I myself wouldn't take my own take on photography seriously.

Coming back, the face unlock was something I personally believed that I wouldn't stick to. However, from the moment I turned it on, I couldn't let go. It was so seamless, whenever I pulled out and pressed the power button, the home screen would light up, I even tried to check it by putting my face aside and turning it on and it would try and detect a face and ultimately give-up, I was impressed. I removed my glasses and tried and again it worked seamlessly. I then tried to unlock it in the dark, the screen would throw a white light on my face and again unlock seamlessly. I even clean-shaved my face to test the feature, yet again it worked. WOW!! I was impressed.

This became a regular, I no longer used the finger print sensor at the back, I would pull out my phone, press the power button and the phone would magically light up. Again and again. There would be an occasional miss. But, I didn't mind that.

To be honest, when the Iphone X was launched, I began to write a blog that was titled "What would be Steve Jobs's take on the Iphone X ?" and the tone of the post was critical. But having lived with the face recognition for almost two months now, I would definitely give it a thumbs-up. It has truly changed my behavior.

Well Done Apple and as the saying goes, "Good artists copy, Great ones steal!! Oneplus has done the latter very well.
